The error “unable to check for update” is generally network issue. As iOS OTA update requires a stable and reliable network connection and thus, you have to make sure that you’re connected to a strong Wi-Fi or cellular data. Here, you can also try to turn off and on Wi-Fi for several minutes.

Tip 1: Reset Network Setting

As we told earlier, the most common reason for this problem is the network issue. Thus, you can try to reset network settings on your device to see if the problem goes away.

Here’s how to reset network settings on the iPhone:

1. 1.To start with, open “Settings”>” General”>” Reset”.

2. Now, click “Reset Network Settings”.

          

Tip 2: Change to Google's Public DNS

If you notice that your iPhone fails to check for an update after you switch to the Google’s Public DNS, then here’s what you need to do to fix the problem.

1. Step 1: Go to the “Settings”>” Wi-FI” on your iPhone.
2. Step 2: Now, click the blue info icon that is next to your current Wi-Fi network.

3. Step 3: Next, click “Configure DNS”>” Manual”>” Add Server and enter the DNS servers - 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.8.4”.

          

Tip 3: Restart or Force Restart Your iPhone

If the problem you’re facing is due to a software issue, then you can fix it by simply restarting iPhone. This will provide a fresh start to your device.

Here’s how to restart on different iPhone models:

On iPhone X or later:

1. 1. Press and hold either volume up or down button and Side button until you see the power-off slider.
2. 2. Drag the slider to turn off your device.

3. 3. Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears on your screen.

          

On iPhone 8 or earlier:

1. 1. Press and hold the Top/Side button until you see the power-off slider.
2. 2. Next, drag the slider to turn off your device.

3. 3. Press and hold the Top/Side button until the Apple logo appears on your screen.

          

The simple restart is capable of solving many problems like “unable to check for an update on iPhone 6s”, but if it doesn’t help to fix the problem for you, then force restart is a more powerful option.

Here’s how to perform a force restart on different iPhone models:

On iPhone 8 Plus/8/X or later:

• Press and release the Volume Up button.
• Press and release the Volume Down button.
• Press and hold the side button until Apple logo does appear on your screen.

On iPhone 7 Plus or 7:

• Press and hold Sleep/Wake and Volume Down button.

Tip 4: Delete iOS 16 Beta If Have

If you’ve downloaded iOS 16 beta version on your device, then new update won’t show up in settings, either. In such cases, you need to first delete the beta and then, go for updation.

Here’s how to delete iOS 16 beta on iPhone:

1. Step 1: To start with, go to “Settings”>” General”.
2. Step 2: Now, scroll down the screen to choose “Profile”.

3. Step 3: Here, click the beta version and then, click Delete profile.

        

Tip 5: Check for Update with iTunes

If all above methods don’t work for you, then it’s time to give up with OTA update and consider checking for update with iTunes. And before you update the device with iTunes, make sure to backup your important device data.

1. Step 1: Run the latest version of iTunes on your computer and then, connect your iPhone to the computer using a digital cable.

2. Step 2: Now, click the device icon and move to the “Summary” tab. Here, click “Check for Updates” option.

        
3. Step 3: Next, the updates will displays if there are any available and you will be able to download and update your iPhone.
